Durango-Silverton Railroad Video

Narrow Gauge RR in the San Juans

Here's a great book on narrow gauge railroads (NGRR) in the San Juan Mountains. Click on the image to learn more and order.

I absolutely love the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (DSNGRR). Whenever I’m in Silverton, which is often during the summer while riding my Yamaha dirtbike, I stop to take pictures. The NGRR is exactly that—an old narrow gauge railroad that’s been resurrected and is a highly successful tourist train, complete with steam locomotives, uniformed conductors, and rehabilitated railcars. (A very nice book about NGRRs in the San Juans is here on my publishing site, or click on the image. It was prepared by the local RR museum staff and is very popular.) The video above was taken June 25, 2010. It shows railroad personnel backing trains up in Silverton. In the first segment, Engine 482 backs up the train into the passenger loading area for the trip back down the hill. In the second, Engine 481 backs up a train to the wye to turn it around. The video was captured in Silverton, Colorado, at the Silverton depot. (The passenger loading area is closer to downtown.)
