Cactus Flower – First of Season

Cactus Flower

Cactus Flower

The Billy Creek State Wildlife Area opened on May 1st, and I was out in the meadow near our home doing some testing on ham radio hidden transmitter hunting. I dropped one of my antennas, which has a bright orange knob on one end. While searching for small flashes of color, I found the tiny cactus you see above. I snapped a picture with my new Android cell phone to share with you. The flower is perhaps an inch in diameter, maybe less (~20mm). We’ve had lots of rain and snow this year, so this could be a bumper year for cactus flowers, which don’t bloom every year.
